GBGames: Being Decisive
pMaking decisions is one of those important tools in your arsenal that you don#8217;t realize is one. You make decisions all the time, right? You decide to get out of bed at the alarm, you decide whether to shower in the morning or not, you decide what to wear, you decide what to eat. It#8217;s no big deal./p
pYet, how many times has the following happened to you?/p
pPerson A: #8220;Ok, lunch time! What do you want to get to eat today?#8221;br /
Person B: #8220;I don#8217;t know. Whatever#8217;s fine. Do you have anywhere in mind?#8221;br /
Person A: #8220;No, I#8217;m fine with anything, too.#8221;br /
Person B: #8220;Ok#8230;.#8221;/p
pBefore you know it, 5 minutes have elapsed, and no one has made the simple decision about where they are going to eat! It may very well be true that no one has a preference, but someone has to propose a solution and get moving to avoid starvation. It might as well be you./p
pBeing decisive helps move you forward in a very deliberate way as opposed to coasting on current circumstances. Whether a small or big decision, it has been made, and action can be taken immediately. Take a step in a direction deliberately. You can almost always take a step back if it turns out to be a mistake. If that restaurant is closed, well, now you know, and you can go somewhere else. That raise or new job you want may not be available, but now you know and can stop wasting mental effort on wondering. /p
pBut the restaurant might be open, or you may get the raise you want! All because you decided to go for it!/p
pBeing indecisive can result in subpar experiences because you either stay in a situation you aren#8217;t happy with, or someone/something forces your hand, putting you in a situation you don#8217;t want to be in. /p
pIf you let other people decide where you#8217;ll be and when you#8217;ll be there, and you#8217;ll find that you never know when you have time for yourself. You#8217;ve abdicated responsibility for your time! I know, because I allowed such a situation to happen to me. It was just easier to let all plans and scheduling go through a girlfriend I had, but one day I realized that it was hard for me to schedule time for myself since I never knew what was already scheduled for me! #8220;I#8217;m going to write a few blog posts today.#8221; #8220;You can#8217;t. We#8217;re playing D#038;D today.#8221; #8220;Oh.#8221; More often, someone would ask me if I wanted to go do something that weekend, and I would have to say, #8220;I don#8217;t know. I have to ask if I#8217;m already doing something then.#8221; Getting my own calendar and keeping it up-to-date was liberating because I could know exactly what I was doing and when. It also sets a tone that I#8217;m in charge of my life and that I haven#8217;t given that responsibility to someone else. /p
pYou may not know where you stand with someone you are interested in, but until you decide to find out, you are in an uncertain situation. Get out of it by making a decision! The other person might make a decision#8230;by going with someone who is a bit more assertive. Get married, or not. Date, or don#8217;t. Have a serious discussion about your relationship, or leave things up in the air. /p
pYou know your business needs all the marketing help you can get, but you#8217;re not sure if you should buy a marketing info product. It came highly recommended from someone you trust, and it costs less than $75. Let#8217;s be real. Worst case? You are out $75. Big deal. You#8217;ll make it back in no time. I don#8217;t even need to tell you what the best case might be. This one should be a no-brainer, but sometimes you hem and haw about these decisions. /p
pBeing decisive is a skill that you need everywhere in your life, not just for the mundane but for your business. Like any skill, you need to practice it. Those no-brainer decisions you don#8217;t make? They get a lot easier once you get comfortable with doing the deciding in your life. Start by suggesting where you want to eat, even if you don#8217;t actually have a preference. Start by suggesting that everyone take your car, or what movie to see, or what snacks to get, or any number of little decisions. Pretty soon, you#8217;ll be comfortable suggesting what destination to go to for road trip, or what to discuss at a business meeting, or what web hosting package to get, or what city you want to live in. /p
pIf it is important, make a decision. By not making a decision, you are saying that it isn#8217;t an important enough decision to make. Don#8217;t complain about the consequences if you leave it up to the rest of the world to decide for you. Take charge. Be decisive./p

Game Producer: How To Trick Others To Work More
pWhen I was something like 10-15 years old I spent time picking strawberries. There was some strawberry fields that needed workers and I spent some (darn hard) time picking those berries in some summers. The owner of the fields was one sneaky guy. Here#8217;s how he tricked us to work more (and resent him). /p
pbGuarantee huge salary + bonuses right in the beginning#8230;/bbr /
This guy was saying that we would get we would get X*1.5 bucks per kilogram (in the last summer we actually got only X bucks per kilo, so it sounded like a really good deal - we would get like 50% more than last year). He said that the market is good and encouraged us to work hard (for short time as you#8217;ll see soon)./p
pb#8230;and then say that something went wrong, and that bonuses won#8217;t be there#8230;/bbr /
Few days later the guy came and said: #8220;Please listen to#8230; it looks like I remembered the sum wrong. The actual salary is X per kilo. Hopefully you can understand old man for messing up the figures#8221;. After working hard for several days (getting to the field like 5:00 am) that wasn#8217;t such a pleasant news for us - but what you gonna do. Everybody was grunting but accepted this. After all, it was just spoken words#8230;/p
pb#8230;repeat the same trick the next year#8230;/bbr /
I didn#8217;t encounter this same, but one of the co-workers said that i#8220;Well, that wasn#8217;t a surprise - I knew this. He did the same last year, so I#8217;ve used to this. Still, I need the money so I#8217;m here#8221;/i. Can you believe this? The guy did the same thing the very next year (and I bet he has done it over and over). /p
pb#8230;and you can bet your white socks that people will resent you, and somebody will probably sue you at some point/bbr /
I#8217;m not sure how well the strawberry field is doing today (or how much the workers really wanna be there) but something tells me that this wasn#8217;t such a good long-term strategy (nor not much of a short-term either) to get motivated workers. And I guess it only works with kids who don#8217;t understand to get the stuff written on paper#8230;/p

GBGames: A Blog Post Approaches. Command?
pIt#8217;s been a long time since I last wrote something, so here is a quick post about what#8217;s going on. /p
pFor some time, I#8217;ve been caught up with crunch at the Day Job. It seems to be dying down a bit, so I can actually do something other than eat, sleep, and work. Maybe I can get my sleep schedule back, too./p
pI had released ia href=http://apps.facebook.com/seafriendsSea Friends/a/i last month, but I#8217;ve only now gotten around to finishing the post-mortem for it. You#8217;ll see that post soon. /p
pYou can follow me on Twitter. My account is a href=http://www.twitter.com/gbgames@GBGames/a, and I#8217;ve added a widget to the sidebar here so it is easy to keep track of my tweets. While a lot of people might think that Twitter is pointless, I#8217;ve actually enjoyed the conversations about game design, programming, and marketing. A number of indies have Twitter accounts, too, so it is an easy way to keep track of what they#8217;re all doing. /p
pYesterday was the three year anniversary for GBGames, LLC! I#8217;m a little excited since I think I am finally getting the hang of this indie game development thing. B-)/p

Ahoy, maties!
When I was in fifth grade, we got this computer game called Pirates of the Carribean. Happily (from my perspective) I came down with chickenpox and had to stay home for a week. I certainly had the pox, but I wasn’t that sick. I spent the entire week, in the middle of an unusually frozen Northwest winter, playing Pirates. It was awesome.
I have realized lately that I’m not hitting flow in anything at any point in my time. I pump every two hours at work. I am pulled in 20 directions when I’m home and usually do chores until I drop. I don’t even get to settle into sleep. I get woken up between two and six times a night by various dependents of mine. (On a bad night, that includes the cats.) I desperately want, need, to get completely absorbed in something until I am no longer conscious of the passing of time.
This is why, I think, I was so desperate to find a good computer game to play. But I’ve played all the ones I know I like until they didn’t quite fit the bill. Either I was bored with them or I knew they weren’t quite what I was looking for.
So last night, babysitter available, my husband and I went in quest of a video game. We struck out completely at one Gamestop. The second was better, but noticeable scarce on PC games. So we decided to stop by Target before admitting we’d been skunked. And guess what? They had the best yet selection of video games for PCs. And they had the 2006 remake of that pirates game.
Arrr!!!!
You’ll be glad to hear that before bed yesterday, I managed to become the 7th most feared pirate. I have yet to locate any of my missing relatives or buried treasure, but that comes next, assuming I can keep the troops from mutinying.
It feels GREAT to just veg out in front of the computer for a bit. I just wish there was another day or two of weekend!

Jay Is Games: Link Dump Friday
Some of life's greatest mysteries are the little things you never get answers to. Like why the number of chocolate chips in a cookie is always even, or why your socks seem to keep getting holes in them even though you only wear them with your good shoes. Link Dump Friday is not one of those mysteries. It tells you exactly what you will get, every time! How awesome is that?!20 March, 2009 | No comments
